Irwin,

I use Midiscan to scan music, and Encore 4 to play it, much as you intend to,
as music minus one to give me practice playing with an "ensemble".

The Midiscan is the only software I know of that will translate a scanned
image to a midi file. It works quite well for fairly simple, straightforward
music, that is clearly printed and not too complicated. For anything else,
such as cross-staff beaming, multiple voices on the same staff, etc., it
makes many mistakes and requires considerable hand-editing to correct it.

Nonetheless, it saves work and is worthwhile. It requires a flat bed scanner
with about 340x340 resolution working best. It technically CAN be used with
a hand scanner, but practically the amount of work and errors that would be
made make it impractical.
