Having introduced myself on a previous post, I move on to some questions
about music software. In addition to my recently revived interest in
clarinet playing, I have, for some years been taking singing lessons.
To help me with this practicing, I first used AdLib Composer and later
SongWright to create music files of the accompaniments for the music my
teacher has me learn. These I play through the computer's sound card for
practice. I also want to do somewhat the same thing for "music minus one"
for clarinet practice.

Unfortunately, I find entering all this music from the computer keyboard
tedious. Recently in a discussion on this list of software there was
mention of using Midiscan to scan printed music into MIDI files that can
be played, edited, transposed, and printed.

Does this seem to work pretty well?

What sort of scanner is needed?
Flatbed or is a hand scanner OK?
How high a resolution seems to be needed?
B&W or color?
Any preferred brands?

Is Midiscan the only such software or are there other programs that do
the same thing?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this subject.
