Hello. I'm Irwin Janney. I have been lurking on the list for several
months and find it enjoyable and informative. I am breaking this first
posting into 2. This first one is to introduce myself. The second will
be to ask some questions about music related software.

I started playing clarinet in the 1930's in about fourth grade and
continued playing in school bands until about the middle of my junior
year at the University of Illinois at which time I was drafted into
the Navy shortly before the end of World War II. When I returned to
school I was out of practice and busy finishing my education and did not
take up the clarinet again at that time.

About 1960 I started playing again and joined the Albuquerque Municipal
Band when the city Parks and Recreation Dept. started it. 10 or 12 years
later I stopped for various reasons.

When I retired about 3 years ago, I thought about playing clarinet again,
but I had given my instruments to one of my sons who became a much better
player than I ever was. About a year ago I inherited my older brother's
Buffet clarinet and had it completely overhauled. Starting up was
discouraging because I found that some fingers did not bend in the same
way as before and could not be placed properly on certain keys. I have
now solved this and am in the process of redeveloping my embouchure and
other skills. I hope to get where I can play with some group again.
Possibly the same city sponsored band, which I believe is now called the
Albuquerque Concert Band.
