A big thank you to the many people offering comments about Neidich
in response to my original post.

I am a beginner on the clarinet who came to the instrument at mid
life because of hours of listening to Neidich. I am a college
professor in a completely unrelated discipline, so -- while I know
what I like -- I lack the tools to join in the conversation about
just what it is that I like about Neidich. But I have a feeling that
reading this list and the postings is going to be an important part
of my connection to the instrument that I love so much.

Who knows? As I learn more, I might change
my mind. For now, all I can say is that
listening to the middle movement of his
Mozart concerto is -- for me -- nothing less than a transcendent
experience.

Thanks to all who helped with my musical education.

By the way, if some of you find that he takes unacceptable
liberties with the piece, who should I listen to who does not?

Thanks,

Dr. Steven M. Gorelick

P.S. To return the favor, I am available to answer questions
about sociology of media and criminology!

All of this banter about Neidich...

I played "Shepherd on the Rock" for Neidich at a master class this summer
in the CCM Grandin Chamber Music Festival. While I found his aesthetic to
be quite different from any other I have ever encountered, I found his
comments to be insightful and extremely helpful.

Even if you don't appreciate Charlie Neidich, know that he thinks about
absolutely every single note of music he ever plays. He is, in my opinion,
a first rate artist with a truly unique approach to the clarinet. You may
not agree with his interpretation, but know that it was carefully thought
out and executed.
