P. may well have favoured the throat notes for their sound rather than for any
narrowly technical reason. Furthermore, he would not be thinking about Boehm
clarinets, presumably. I heard a broadcast recording of the Overture a few days
ago (I didn't take note of the performers) in which the predominantly reedy
timbre of the clarinet playing was very noticeable. (D. Leeson, please
don't shoot). Is this how klezmer clarinettists are supposed to sound? I use
"suppose" in every possible sense.
