About 2-3 years ago I was playing a job with the German band I'm in at a
local restaurant. Before we started, I was warming up outside. A
yuppie-looking fellow came up to me and asked me what instrument I was
playing.
"A clarinet", I said.
"Well, is it some special kind of clarinet?"
"No, just your ordinary run-of-the-mill clarinet." (I should verify that
I have a B.Mus. in clarinet performance, and have a fairly mainstream
American-classical-type sound.) [Warning: we had an extensive
discussion of national schools of playing last year on this list.]

"Well, it just sounds so DIFFERENT."

(Different from what -- his 10-year-old? I wish I'd said that...)
