Jay,

Keep in mind that what you hear in your sound is not even close to what
others (audience) hear. What you hear as uncontrolled could be more open
that you're used to. It's very important that you let other clarinetists
(preferably competent ones) hear you play.

Everett's comments have a great deal of merit. You still need the
resistance in your setup. You shouldn't have to do golttial(?) calisthenics
to play the clarinet.
