Perhaps one solution for newcomers is when they first hook up is to send them a
little introductory file about the FAQs, what they are where they are and let
them browse.

Klarinet as far as I am concerned is one of the biggest "digest" postings I get,
and I tend to be very selective about what I read these days. That's not to say
it isn't excellent, but some of it isn't of great interest.
