I just joined the Klarinet list and saw the music software thread. I use
SongWright, a DOS program, so not hugely memory-hungry, and although I
haven't had time to use it much, I found it rather simple to use once my
fingers got used to the commands (it supports a mouse, but I find entering
notes from the keyboard [computer, not midi] easier and faster than mouse
input. Note editing is also easy. The program was $120 when I bought it a
year ago. According to the promotional material, a lot of colleges and
symphonies use it.
If you like doing stuff on computer, the program supports user-defined
keyboard macros and an "undo" feature for those inevitable mistakes.
If you would like more info, I would be happy to snail-mail you a copy of the
brochure.

P. S.
In the area of software, are you happy with your current word processing
package? I use Geoworks, a word processing and desktop publishing program,
along with a simple and elegant file manager, an easy to use data base and a
spreadsheet. I find it MUCH better and easier (and FAR more intuitive and
truly enjoyable to use) than anything I have seen produced for Windows, and
for $80+shipping, its a great value. It is based on its own operating
environment (called GEOS), and applications written for it are available both
on AOL and the Internet, and others, I'm sure. I like the suite of programs
so much that I cannot help spreading the word, and a larger installed base
means more third-party software development, a good situation for everyone.
I would be happy to send you along information about that, too. Please let
me know via e-mail, as I am already falling behind on the Klarinet list! For
those on AOL, I can upload the shareware version to you in the form of a
self-extracting zip file.
