In general a wider tip opening fits a softer reed and vice versa and a longer
facing fits a stronger reed and vice versa. try not to go too far in either
direction is my advice: medium is best (though definitions of medium vary
quite a bit). Also, beware of "mouthpieceitis"-it is easy to catch,
expensive and hard to cure! Seek the guidance of an experienced teacher for
your choice of mouthpieces-perhaps the most important part of the instrument.
