In our music department, we decided to install a music notation program
on several computers in our keyboard lab and in the music library. A
committee consisting of several faculty members who are especially
attuned to technological matters investigated just about all the
commercially available programs, and decided on Encore. At that time,
version 3.1 (I think) was the latest available. I believe version 4.0
has recently been issued, and some who are familiar with it tell me that
the new version has corrected a few shortcomings of the earlier editions.

This program accepts input from a keyboard or other MIDI device, or from
the computer keyboard and/or mouse. It is quite powerful, makes copy
with an excellent appearance when used with a good printer, and is
intuitive and therefore easy to learn. In fact, I first learned to use
it without having the manual available, and I am no expert on these things.

We found the program to be easier to learn and use than Finale, and more
powerful than most of the others we looked at.

Have fun!
