Actually, about the only part of an A clarinet that isn't longer than a Bb
instrument is the barrel, or at least I use the same length barrel on both.
That the A clarinet is longer is obvious if you put them together
side-by-side. If you once try to bring your Bb clarinet's pitch down a
half-step with a barrel alone, you'll hear why the entire instrument must be
longer - the scale is unuseable.
