My wife and I went to the Hollywood Bowl last night to see
Garrison Keillor's one night show. During his presentation of
"The Young Lutheran's Guide to the Orchestra," in which he was
searching for the "right instrument for a young Lutheran to play
(harp or triangle), he fixed momentarily on the clarinet player
who he said must deal constantly with rags and pads and grease
and tools of all kinds to keep the instrument functioning.
He added that the instrument goes sharp in hot weather and
when it gets cold, reeds dry out and the wood cracks. The
clarinet section he lamented is an emergency room. Vintage
Keillor.
