The Klarinet FAQ
James Fay, nvfayxj@-----.us
v1.1, 4 September 1995
This document describes the Klarinet mailing list available
through the Internet. It is intended for persons interested in connecting to
the Klarinet list and in sharing information there.

What is Klarinet?

Klarinet is an unmoderated discussion group for clarinet players, teachers,
and enthusiasts. All interested persons are invited to subscribe, and all
aspects of clarinettistry are discussed. This is an excellent forum to ask
questions, share information, or just listen.

How much does Klarinet Cost?

Klarinet is free, there is no charge to subscribe. You may have to pay a fee
to an Internet Service Provider, unless you already have this service at
your school or work.

How do I sign up for Klarinet?

Send an e-mail message to: listserv@-----.bitnet (which is a software
program). In the body of the message, put: subscribe klarinet Your_Name (for
example, I'd put: subscribe klarinet Jim Fay). Make sure that this part of
the message is in the top left corner of the message area. It is usually
helpful to turn your signature file off when sending commands like this to a
listserv.

I can't get my message through to Klarinet or the listserv!

If your message cannot get through to the listserv, you may have to use a
Internet-Bitnet Gateway. Try sending to:
listserv%vccscent.bitnet@-----.ca or to:
listserv%vccscent.bitnet@-----.

How do I send mail to Klarinet?

Send mail for Klarinet to: klarinet@-----.bitnet, or use the ARPANET
"kludge" through a gateway as discussed above.

What is Bitnet?

BITNET (Because its Time Network) is an earlier network which is connected to
the Internet --as are other networks-- by a gateway.

Who runs this thing?

The list owners are Jim Fay (nvfayxj@-----.us) and Cap Bromley
(cbromley@-----.us) of Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale,
Virginia (just West of Washington, DC). Jim is a Professor of Music and a
clarinettist. Cap is a music school graduate (organist) and a Systems
Engineer. Much system administration is done by Ken Ballard
(tcballk@-----.

Is this part of The Clarinet Magazine?

No. This list is totally independent of The Clarinet Magazine, The
International Clarinet Association, or of any other organization. It was
developed solely to serve anyone interested in the clarinet. The
International Clarinet Association does have a presence on Klarinet, with a
liaison.

Ok, I'm subscribed, what do I do now?

Anything you want! It would be a good idea to send a note to Klarinet
introducing yourself to the list and perhaps saying what particularly
interests you about the klarinet. Don't be surprised (and don't take it
personally) if you don't get a response at first. Maybe just send a message
again in a couple of days.

Can I search the Klarinet archives for specific information?

Yes you can. Robert E. Winston (rwinston@-----.com) has written a short
article on how to do this, which will be available on the World Wide Web
page mentioned below.

Why "Klarinet" and not "Clarinet,"can't you spell?

There already is Clarinet on the Internet, it is a subscription-based
financial news network. Since Jim Fay was working on this Brahms
dissertation at the time, we had this brilliant idea............!

Who do I complain to?

First, please be aware that it takes a fair amount of system administration
to keep Klarinet running. This is a cooperative effort of both a
multi-campus college and it's central state administration. Sometimes
(rarely) things break down. Please be patient. Simply try again in a day or
so. If then nothing is happening, contact the list owners.

I just got dropped from Klarinet. Do I use the wrong reed, or
something?

As one of the list owners, my personal mailbox gets hit regularly with over
200 klarinet error messages DAILY! This is why you don't hear much from us.
In the majority of cases, these are caused by people letting their mailboxes
get full to the point that further incoming messages are rejected by their
host. Because these messages really clog the Internet, we sometimes simply
have to drop a person from the list. Please don't take it personally, and
just re-subscribe in a day or two, and keep up with your mail.

Is there a web page for Klarinet?

There currently is no home page for Klarinet. This FAQ will be kept on my
home page, http://nvmusic.vccs.edu/~nvfayxj/http/index.html.

What do you talk about on this thing?

All aspects of clarinet history, construction, playing, and teaching are
discussed. Very often it seems that subjects go through cycles, where people
share questions and information.
