My favorite, sorry, is Finale. Everything you say is true.
DAUNTING learning curve, but it has enormous power.
You might consider also downloading the demo version of
MIDISCAN. It is available at http://www.musitek.com
You'll also need pkunzip however to get it into useable form.
I scanned the five stave score for Mozart's quintet (K.411)
on Friday (TIF format, using another scanning program) and
brought the files home. MIDISCAN took each file, concatenated
one after the other (one page per file, compressed format).
The copy that I used for scanning was pretty bad, but MIDISCAN
did wonders with it. It put in some sexy grace notes between
eighth rests because it mis-read black marks on the bad copy.
They might have given Wolfgang some radical ideas.
Oh, I think that the demo version will do only two tracks,
or maybe two channels. The MIDI file that I created played
back only Clarinet I and II, in any case.
