I recently tried out (briefly) a Leblanc bassethorn, and I tend to agree with
Beth M. that such an instrument would be far preferable in a wind band to the
average alto. I'm not so sure about about the Leblanc instrument in the
classical repertory, especially Mozart. Has anyone any relevant experience? The
Leblanc seems somehow too smooth and without any hint of the "lugubre"
(Berlioz) in its tone.
