I just wanted to put in my 2 cents worth...

I was a 2 year all-stater... on alto clarinet. (Iowa) My *small*
high school owned 3, and between high school and jr. high, all three
are in use every year.

I currently play Bb and alto at the college level. This school has 3
altos, but only 1 is really in good condition. My director is even
talking about doing some piece (a variations, i think... i don't know
the piece) that opens with an alto clarinet solo not cross written in
any other part.

So... I guess I don't consider the alto clarinet to be obsolete...
rare, maybe... but not obsolete.
