There is a very fine traditional jazz clarinetist (who also plays
excellent Bechet-influenced soprano AND bass saxophone) named Henning
Hoehne (and I may have misspelled the name) playing in the
Baltimore-Washington area. Henning was once with the Naval Academy Band
and now is featured with the Peabody Ragtime Ensemble (for info about the
Ensemble's appearances, contact leader Ed Goldstein,
E7M7GOL@-----. Henning also plays each Wednesday evening,
starting at about 8:00 p.m., at Bertha's on Broadway in Baltimore. If I'm
not mistaken, the group (Big Bertha's Rhythm Kings) consists of Henning
and John Wessner (trombone) in front, Jim Riley on banjo, Giff Blaylock
(or a player to be named later) on tuba, and Tilden Street on drums.
If you have a yen for things like Bechet's "Dans les rues d'Antibes,"
you'll like these guys.
