Beauty of tone and its relationship to pitch perception and projection has
been of great interest to me for many years. In musical sounds, abundant
strength in the frequency range of the lower order harmonics (1 through 8)
is essential for secure tonal definition - what many musicians call
"center" or "core". This is important in our perception of both timbre and
pitch. Additionally a variety of identifiable spectral ingredients lend
coloristic characteristics to the tone. The power and nature of these more
wide ranging ingredient features and their relationship to non-linear
functions of the ear, can allow tones to be more easily identified and
better tracked through time by the listener. This phenomenon, as well as
sound pressure level, is especially important in situations where
accompaniment has the potential to mask the solo line.
