David and Lisa bring up great thoughts on intonation. Allow me.

There is always something to fix. Even if you play with someone every day for
years, there is always some intonation problem that will need to be
addressed.
I think that having an instrument that has a good scale is great, but more
so, something that will be easy to adjust as well.
The adjustments need to be right and leaks taken care of.

The ear has to ultimately, be the deciding factor. The musician should make
his or her own adjustments throughout a performance, rehearsal, whatever.
Putting down certain keys is ideal, but more important, knowing when and if
you do have to put them down, is something that has to be addressed every
time you play the note.

A tuner with an audible pitch could help. Set the pitch on the tuner and work
your way up to that note. This is just an exercise and should be different
playing it with other musicians. Hopefully this doesn't insult anyone's
intelligence.
Another way is to have a friend play a note and you start a few notes away
and work your way to that note. Adjust accordingly.
