I attended a concert in a small German town where Antony Pay played
clarinet in Bartok's Contrasts. Needless to say the sound was
beautiful. On the last chord the players made quick intonation
adjustments to perfect the tuning and the difference was
remarkable as to how well it sounded. It was good before but it
was the best chord I thought I would ever hear after the change.
This change was done in a split second with lots of eye contact
between the players. After this experience I would agree with
David's statement.
