Devin,

What competitions are you thinking of doing? I've been in two competitions
recently, the 1994 ICA competition, and the Buffet competition last April.
Memorization was not required and practically no-one did it. I think
that it is not common in wind competitions for people to memorize. However,
in competitions that involve other instruments (piano, strings), you will
find that it is standard practice. I would find out the rules of the
particular competition, and if memorization is not required, do what
feels most comfortable to you. Good luck!!

PS I have been in competitions where memorization WAS required, so it is
important to check these things.
