If playing *any* work with music as opposed to without music gives a
better performance, use the music.

I have seen the Copland played by great players with and without music. I
have heard spectacular performances of the Corigliano twice in
performance, both times with music.

In my opinion, great performance is a far more important criterion than
appearances i.e., using music or not. I pay most of my money to hear,
not look. It is true that on stage appearance plays a significant part in
the live performances, but playing from music is far less distracting than
poor stage deportment (bowing, dress, respect for applause, chit-chat with
colleagues onstage, especially in an orchestral or large chamber music
situation). For me, next to poor live performances, poor stage deportment
is the worst thing that can happen when I attend a concert.
