Hi Larry;

<Larry post said>

<I would like to hear the considered opinions of list members regarding
choice of reed strength for junior high school clarinet players. I was
recently in a discussion with a band director who was lementing the fact
that her grade nine clarinet players insisted upon playing on #4 reeds.
This struck me as a bit much for young players. What would your
recommendation be regarding reed strength for beginners through the
first three years of study in a band program?>

Larry I don't think there is a problem. Remember, reeds are very
different from one brand to the next, So its hard to say just how stiff the reed
is from only the number. The Mouth piece has a huge roll in the effective
strength of the reed. Lastly, the each person is different, I think if she has a
private instructor to help her find what is right for her, that would be best.
If she is getting a good clarinet sound then its ok. If she is not it still may
something other then the reed strength. good luck Larry.
