I'm not sure I really answered your question.

I've had beginners who were putting lots of air through a horn, and when I
played duets, their pitch was so low, I could not adjust. The reed was not
supporting the air. So, I had them play on Mitchell Lurie 4 reeds. Reason
being that they are generally quite soft, Mitchell Lurie is made by Rico, and
their fibers tend to be generally farther apart. The heart is closer to the
tip than the reeds they have been playing on, but not as much as a vandoren.
If the Mitchell Lurie is too soft, then I have them go to a Vandoren 3. Ask
Vandoren for a reed comparison chart. I find it very helpful and pretty
accurate.

I'm glad you asked the question, because I have had to explain myself many
times to band directors. My husband is a band director, and he uses this
system and has had success with his young clarinetists.

I hope this helps!! Beth Morgenroth
