I have all my beginners start on a MITCHELL LURIE 3. This seems like a
lot of reed, but because of the quality and consistency of this reed, I
have found that a 3 plays as well as say a La Voz 2 1/2, or a Rico 2. The
harder reed makes it easier for the students to produce a characteristic
tone.
Some can't get a nice sound on the 3, so I give them a 2 1/2 with
instructions to keep the 3 for later use.
As each student progresses, and the range extends upwards, I move them to
harder reeds. My best ninth graders all play mitchell lurie 5's.
This works for me. Victor
