David, if you will hunt up the history files using the words "African
Blackwood" and "mpingo" you will find a month long discussion on
this subject about a year ago when the documentary you saw first was
aired on public TV. I believe it is called "The Tree of Music."

The bottom line of the discussion is that, as beautiful and noble as
African blackwood is, we'll just find a new source of other woods and
that no catastrophe is about to befall clarinet players, this despite
the views mentioned on that program you mentioned.
