Jack,
We play with so many different musicians and groups and pitch centers, that
it is usually wise to get back to home base with a tuner.
So practicing with a tuner is essential. If any synthesizer is used in
perfomance, the wind player usually has to stay around 440.
But this doesn't mean having one out in the open to tune yourself every
possible minute.
You also have to play with others and develop your ear to hear pitches and
adjust to them. Just like playng phrases together in time, pitch should be a
cooperative venture. Throw ego out the window.
So practicing on your own with a tuner and finding that note again on your
horn, is important. When you play in an ensemble next time, you might be a
little better off than before. It would be just a matter of reference.
