My source has considerably more info on the Javanese setup than on the Balinese
gamelan. Large Javanese gamelans have (or used to have) a female vocalist and a
male chorus, by the way, so there is a TRADITIONAL role for women here - or, at
least, ONE woman. Thanx for the explanation of "wayang" - I think I've heard of
this under other names as well.
