I'm sorry if my remarks were unclear -- I didn't mean to suggest that
doublers are by definition deficient players. What I meant is that
(it seems) many doublers do not approach each instrument as though
that instrument were their sole source of music making. Those who do
more than try to "get by" on the other instrument(s) generally get
better results. I have a great deal of respect for doublers (being
one myself), but feel that all too often sax players (for example)
try to just "get by" on flute and clarinet.
