British-style brass band, it's most likley to be the tenor horn (alto horn in
the U.S., i.e., the little one in E flat). It is alleged to take hardly any
breath. There seems to be a fair number of young female trumpeters and
cornetists about these days, though.
There is a quite horrible tendency over here for the flute to be taken up by
tall, blonde, willowy girls who sway about - I suppose this arises from some
narcissistic aesthetic consideration or other ...
