Here at Indiana University of PA, in both our wind ensemble and our symphony
band, tuning notes that are good for each particular section of instruments are
given. The clarinets are given open g, throat e, and full c. (In my opinion,
low e should also be given because that note always tends to be way out of
tune). The french horns are given two notes, one being to tune their trigger.
And so on.....
Then the entire woodwind section is given a concert Bb, then the entire brass
section is given a concert Bb, only after each section has tuned individually.
The whole process takes between 5 and 10 minutes. We are expected to be all
warmed up and ready to tune 10 minutes before the class is scheduled to start.
The motto is: if you're on time, you're late.
