I've seen lots of posts about tactile and aural memory, but none about
analysis and/or "intellectual" memory. By this I mean you need to know
crucial starting notes (starts on G above the staff, etc...) so that if
your tactile memory fails you on stage, you can recover by remembering
that the next phrase begins on 3rd line B (or whatever).Someone mentioned
analyzing the scales and arpeggio patterns - this will help too. You can aid
this sort of memory by working on your "photographic" memory - work to
visualize the notes as you see them on your edition's pages.

As an orchestral player, I don't memorize much. But when I do (the
Mozart, for instance, and the Debussy "Rhapsodie") the effect is
liberating - no visual distractions to interfere with communicating the
music.
