I have to agree with the last post concerning Clarinetist and saxophone
playing. My 14 year old son is one of the best young clarinet players in NYS
and just about 10 months ago he started playing the alto sax. His
progression on the sax has been unbelievable, he is right now at the same
level on the sax as he is on the clarinet and he has been studying the
clarinet for 6 years. Why? I can't really say.... fatherly intuition leads
me to believe he feels its more of a manly thing to play. Most of his peer
clarinet players are girls, and he also gets to play it in a jazz ensemble
which allows him some freedom to improvise. I also have been told because of
embouchre and things of that sort it is easier to go from the clarinet to
the sax instead of vice versa, and that a ggod knowledge of the clarinet
helps in the learning of the fingering for the sax.
