In my experience, some people are able to memorize visually, actually
seeing the notes as they play, others auditorially, but for most it is
a perceptual-motor activity. It requires playing a section over and over
until that section becomes an automatic response, then another section, then
another and another, joining the sections together as they are learned.

I learned this technique first when playing the guitar, then applied it
to the piano, and now to the clarinet and it works for me.

The idea is to create a loop of a phrase, measure, stave or whatever is
comfortably grasped repeating the loop until the playing becomes automatic,
then extending it.
