Clark suggested the Jim Gillespie (now professor of clarinet in Denton, TX)
did his dissertation on British clarinet music. If I remember correctly,
Jim did his dissertation on British clarinet music for clarinet/voice and
piano (i.e., Shepherd on the Rock music). And what Jim found was an
incredible amount of music that existed because of a social phenomenon.
It was roughly the equivalent of dating. The man would play the clarinet,
the woman would sing, the pianist could be anyone, and the first two would
romance each other with these songs about love. I think Jim recorded a bunch
of them with his wife and they were wonderful. Whole collections of these
miniatures existed.

I have not heard if Jim's remarkable discovery caught on, but I would love
to find out what he did with the collection of music that he discovered.

Of course I could have all of this mixed up in my head and be thinking about
someone else.

Oh yes. Fred Cicetti said that we were wonderful. No Fred. I am
wonderful. The rest are just so-so. And Clark Fobes does not really exist.
The shop that bears his name is run by trolls.
