Many thanks to all who responded. The barrels are now off, thanks to the
kindness of one of Ottawa, Canada's professional clarinettists. His method:
rock without force from side to side where possible, to loosen, and use his
strength of an ox to pull the barrel off the joint along the axis without
any twisting. Makes sense, though I couldn't do it. Of course, using
force to twist or bend could cause damage.

I'm still digesting the various suggestions re modifications to the
instrument so that it doesn't happen again. Once again, many thanks.

Martin
