Subj: Introduction and request for info on older Buffet

Greetings

After lurking on this list for 6 months, I'll step out in the open
briefly because I have a question, but first, the obligatory
introduction.

I'm another reborn clarinetist, having played (Contra!) through high
school I quit for almost 30 yrs. When my son started on alto sax in
band last fall, and because I needed an alternate oral stimulation
to replace my cigarette habit, I started again last fall ( on a Bb
Soprano). I'm now taking lessons and am working on Baermann and some
Mozart duets. I have been playing some jazz duet arrangements (where
can I find more?) and my dual goals are improved technical and
improvisational proficiency.

I play what has been called a "plywood clarinet" in this list: a Conn
Pan American, but am seriously looking at a Buffet. Hence my questions:

Is there any reason for an amateur to be cautions about an older (s#
ca. 27500) Buffet? Are there typically intonation problems with an
instrument of this age (can someone tell me just how old it is)? With
no cracks/pins, excellent feel to the keys, and a small, repaired chip
at the lower bell ring, what is a realistic price range for this
instrument?

I must say I have the utmost respect for the members of this list
for the consistently high level of mutual respect and content found
here.

Regards,
Mack Endres
