Subj: advice on Kohlert bass clarinet
Date: Mon, 24 Jul 1995 18:15:00 -0400

Hello, I'm planning to purchase a bass clarinet soon, hopefully in the
$1000 to $1500 range, and the best deal I've seen so far is a wood Kohlert
2 piece at Sam Ash in NY for $1000. Does anyone know anything about this
manufacturer, and whether the price is fair? There was no model number on
the instrument, and the keywork seem to be in good shape. I tried the
instrument and the lower register is fine, however I had some trouble
playing with the register key open. I am not sure whether this is due to
my technique since I only play soprano now. (I'm told that their repair
man can take a look at the keywork for me to ensure everything's ok)

Any advice on the instrument, prices in general, or other places to look
in NYC would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

James
