Nicole de Beer wrote explaining why the flute operates as an open pipe and
the clarinet as a closed pipe. I agree with her explanation, but don't
really understand why you need to get that complicated, talking about both
pressure and velocity. Open means open at both ends and the flute is open at
the embouchure hole and the bottom end.

The clarinet acts as a closed pipe (i.e., closed at one end) because the reed
effectively closes off the mouthpiece end and the bell end is open.
