Dear Klarinet List Subscribers:

The 1995 Young Artist Competition, sponsored by the International
Clarinet Association, was held at the recent '95 International
ClarinetFest at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. The finalists and
winners were:

First Prize: Robert Pickup of Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA. He is a recent
graduate of the University of South Africa with a bachelors degree in
musicology. Aged 22, he studies with Mario Trinchero, retired principal
clarinetist of the SABC Symphony Orchestra. He received a new clarinet,
compliments of the Leblanc Corporation, $1000 US, and a performance of
the Debussy "Premier Rhapsody" with the Lackland Air Force Band (AETC
Band of the West) at the ClarinetFest, July 14, 1995. A great
performance!

Second Prize: Izumi Fujiyama, a native of JAPAN. Aged 23, she studies
with Howard Klug at Indiana University in Bloomington where she recently
received a Performance Diploma. Ms. Fujiyama was also a finalist in the
1994 YAC. She received $750 US as a prize.

Third Prize: Amanda C. Miller of Ontatio, CANADA. Ms. Miller is a
student of Robert Riesling at the University of Western Ontario, London,
Ontario, CANADA. She received a $500 prize. I believe she was also a
finalist in the 1994 YAC.

Honorable Mention: Bharat Chandra of Overland Park, Kansas. Bharat is a
student at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He was a
finalist in the 1994 YAC and also the 1993 YAC (I think).

CONGRATULATIONS!

Judges for the 1995 YAC were: Guy DePlus (France), Mitchell Lurie (USA),
Alfred Prinz (Austria), Himie Voxman (USA), Davis Campbell (Great
Britain), Andrew Simon (Hong Kong), and Floyd Williams (Australia).

Prize money and instruments are compliments of Leblanc, Selmer, Buffet
and Yamaha. The clarinet prize is given on a rotation basis by these
companies. THANK YOU CLARINET MANUFACTURERS!

Robert Spring, Professor of Clarinet at Arizona State University, hosted
the '95 ClarinetFest. Thanks to his excellent organizational skills and
superb musicianship, this was a fantastic conference for aficionados of
the clarinet. THANKS Bob!
