Tom asks about ear protectors: something I looked into a short while ago.

On a recommendation from one of the list members, I bought some shooters'
ear plugs and tried them for a particularly loud concert a few weeks ago.
They were quite good - much better than swimmers' ear plugs. The
distortion of my own playing was acceptable - I had one plug in (near the
trumpet) for the whole of the overture and both in for some particularly
loud passages.

I heard a discussion with a member of the Australian Opera Orchestra
recently about her problems with noise in the pit of the Sydney Opera
Theatre. Some players have some plugs especially made which they can
adjust to let more or less sound through. They cost them about $100
Australian for the pair. They are moulded for the particular person's
ears by an audiologist.
