While it is possible to gateway a mail list to a Usenet newsgroup, there are
many disadvantages.
One is that being gatewayed to a newsgroup allows anyone to jump into the
discussion. I don't mean that Klarinet should be a private club, but just the
fact that you have to subscribe and have your mailbox filled up tends to keep
out people who don't have some serious interest in the group and aren't willing
to make a commitment to at least delete all the mail from their mailboxes.
Also as a newsgroup, there would be no way to stop the inevitable postings from
folks like the historical revisionists who don't mind sending out 100k
treatises explaining how the 6 million Jews in pre-war Europe where really
taken away by flying saucers to another planet.
Although it's probably never been necessary, the Listserv moderators can filter
out disruptive postings from nazis, MAKE MONEY FAST schemers, and the hordes of
barbarian trombonists just waiting out there in cyberspace for an innocent
Listserv list to loot, plunder and pillage.
AND, it is possible to search the Klarinet Listserv.
