The articulated G# is a method where you can press the G# key with
the pinky of the left hand to play G#, and without having to lift the
pinkie, you can put down the first or second finger of your right hand,
and the G# sill close. It makes F#-G# trills possible, and it also
makes playing in more than two sharps or four flats easier because
you don't have to coordinate lifting the pinky of your left hand
as you go up the scale. Sax players learn this trick quite early,
and it is one of the most annoying things about doubling clarinet
or flute that they don't have it. AARGH!
