In response to Dr. Geidel's proposition... There seems to be a great deal
of talk about the validity of undergraduate performance degrees (be they
BFA or BM). What do these degrees prepare students to do??? What kinds
of jobs are available??? Is a performance degree from even a conservatory
viable??? We have talked about this a great deal at Mount Union, a small
liberal arts college (we offer performance degrees, but specialize in
music education in our department). Some students do insist upon pursuing
a BM in performance (we have a number of students from Indonesia who REALLY
want this degree). As educators, we have an obligation to make it clear
that jobs in performance are VERY limited, and that the BFA or BM in
perf tends to be followed (by necessity) by graduate school.
