I had suggested the Donizetti "Studie fur Klarinette" as a work for
unaccompanied clarinet that I like, and I indicated that it was from the
Classical period.

Donizetti lived from 1797 to 1848. I don't know when he wrote his "Studie"
or whether it would fall into the Classical or Romantic periods if
arbitrarily judged by composition date. I'm simply stating that my ears tell
me the style sounds like Classical period music. I'm not an opera buff and
won't question whether or not Donizetti wrote "Grand Opera", but this work
doesn't make me think of grand opera. The Studie diddles - it doesn't have
any big tunes. It sounds more like Crusell than Verdi.
