Friends, this will be one of my last notes before signing off for three
weeks to be spent in France doing genealogic research in the cemeteries of
Alsace. It is a cheap vacation. How much can you spend in a cemetery?

However, I just got a note from an old friend who has just joined the board
and I think it would be very nice for those who wish to greet Tony Pay who
is in the UK. Tony and I worked together with the San Diego Symphony about
10 years ago. He conducted and played the Weber 2nd concerto and I played
basset horn on a performance of the Gran Partitta. It was a great pleasure
to work with such a sensitive performer and an excellent musician. Shortly
after that performance, Tony was invited to play the Mozart concerto on
basset clarinet with the San Francisco Symphony and he was my house guest.
I took him down to Santa Cruz (which is right on the ocean about 30 miles
from here) but I couldn't get him on one of the terror rides. I figured if
he got killed riding the "Killer Death!" I would inherit his basset clarinet.
We finally did get on the Merry-Go-Round and he left for the UK with his
basset clarinet intact.

Tony's recording of the Mozart concerto with Hogwood has won many prizes
and it is the recipient of many well-deservged awards.

One of the more enjoyable things about Tony's conducting of the Gran Partitta
was that he encouraged improvisation. Me he did not have to ask twice!!!

I wanted you all to know that I will miss our delicious discussions over the
next few weeks, and it will be hard for me to be swilling down all that
champagne and stuffing myself full of pate de fois gras, but I'll have
to sacrifice myself. It's a tough job but someone has to do it. I'll
sign off tomorrow at noon, CA time.

But I want you all to restrain yourselves from over use of the "d-word"
or "dark sound." I don't want to undo all the good that has happened with
diminished use of that non-descriptive.

Happy summer all!
