I agree with Clark and Lisa that the variety and thoroughness of education
offered at universities is of great value to any student, performer or not.
In addition, I believe that it is important for the art of music to keep
those who think about music (such as PhD candidates in musicology and theory)
as close as possible to those who perform and compose music. Otherwise the
scholars risk becoming hopelessly out of touch with practical reality, and
applied majors risk becoming mere performing monkeys.
