Jennifer and Tom,
It is true that it may be a charming affectation of old conductors to insist
on using "i" to create the plural of every word of Italian origin. How many
times have I heard Celli, Bassi, Clarinetti (oddly, never basso or clarinetto
when speaking in the singular). But why never other non "i" plurals, e.g.
viole, arpe, etc. Or would you ask in a restaurant in America or England
"What paste (instead of pastas) are you serving today?" Probably not. IMHO,
when a word becomes fully assimilated into the English language it is usually
proper to use an English plural constuction.
Or maybe we should just say "glisses"
Andy
