I just realized something the other day.
A few years ago, I was going on a trip to France, and needing a new
clarinet, I figured it would be cheaper to get one there. I did, but
considering I was really quite inexperienced at the time, I ended up
getting a model based on price alone - anything I could try would
sound better than the model I had previously.
In any case, I have been using it since then, and it has always been
quite to my liking, but I noticed that I had to pull out a lot to be
(more) in tune with the orchestra I'm in. Now, I supposed as my ear is
becoming better developped, I am noticing many more tuning problems,
especially when I'm in a small group. It is so bad that even after
pulling out a LOT (too much for my liking), I have to spend much energy
adjusting the pitch, not leaving me much to do with getting a nice
sound.
I realized that the tuning for a European clarinet might be different
from A@-----. I have tried it with a tuner, and it plays consistantly at
A@-----. I tried the mouthpiece and barrel on my A clarinet,
which gave me A@-----.
Can I assume that this clarinet is tuned to a different standard, and if
so what can I do about it? Is it adjustable with a longer barrel, or
am I going to have to try to get a different clarinet?
(It's a Selmer Prologue, #F1673
